Elaine Vitone is a magazine writer and editor based in Pittsburgh, Pa. She is associate editor of Pitt Med,
the magazine for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and a freelance writer for regional
and national publications. She has written for GQ, Ladies' Home Journal, Publishers Weekly,
San Francisco Chronicle, US Airways Magazine, and Pittsburgh magazine, among others.
Elaine has profiled a range of ordinary people with extraordinary stories, from a polio survivor, to a
female marine, to a college football star-turned-Catholic priest. She especially enjoys using
character-driven narrative to bring the complexities of science and medicine to life.
Elaine's features and essays have won awards from the International Association
of Business
Communicators, the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation,
and the
University of Pittsburgh,
where she earned her MFA in nonfiction writing.
In their spare time, Elaine and her ubertalented husband, photographer Dylan Vitone, renovate
their
1920s Victorian home in Pittsburgh's Highland Park neighborhood. Elaine chronicles their
misadventures in her houseblog, Bless This DIY Mess, and reconnoiters various
home-improvement topics as a contributing writer for The Old House Web.
